5 Effective Ways to Cope with Stress After Rehab

Life comes on life’s own terms and there’s no steering clear of it since that option would be death. We should just avoid that one altogether. Like it or not, we have to learn to cope in life and deal with everything that occurs as a direct result of living. There isn’t a magic eraser to eradicate all the crud that comes flying our way, nor is there an invisible ink to hide all the drama that unravels down our paths. No unfortunately there isn’t any huge button that changes all the hoopla we’re forced to deal with on the daily. So we’re left to cope with life’s stresses.

Those stresses can range from reading Trump’s new tweets, dealing with family issues, budgeting our finances correctly, reading Trump’s new tweets, or as simple as dealing with your children morning after morning. For some, there’s alcoholism. Alcoholism is a nasty disease that dwells between our two ears, ever causing us to obsess over miniscule things while continually making poor decisions. With active alcoholism, imbibing becomes the very essence of life. Problems begin to accumulate, relationships start to flare, and ambition flushes itself strait down the toilet. However, some tire of this way of life and attempt to get sober. Be it Alcoholics Anonymous, divine intervention, or an institution of sorts, we find a way to put the hooch down. Now it’s about learning to cope with stress after rehab, after detox, and after the protective bubble has been removed.

Coping Without Doping

Putting the substances down and getting clean is all it can take to send life back in the direction it came. Once done, the stresses of life will slowly subside as a clear head takes the reins. A life beyond your wildest dreams will become attainable again and things will begin to look brighter. Yet even so, life still won’t perfect itself just from sobering up- it’ll still continue to show up on it’s own terms. Learning to cope with stress after rehab or detox is how we’ll maintain the transition. Why go that far just to let the stress ruin us again?

If we’ve gotten ourselves to this point in our lives, it’s apparent that our best thoughts and ideas haven’t been worth much lately. So from here on out, one priority should be listening to the advice of others and keeping our mouths shut. Without the mental growth, we will not learn from our mistakes properly. If we do not learn from our mistakes, we will be doomed to repeat them in the future. That being said, a few effective ways to cope with stress after rehab are:

  • Maintain a positive attitude
  • Make aftercare a priority
  • Healthy patterns(eat, sleep, exercise)
  • Play the tape out identifying problems
  • Have multiple outlets for channeling

Of these coping methods, they all reflect the need for communication. Who we talk to and surround ourselves with is a true testament of character even to ourselves. The type of person we allow ourselves to be and who we want to be are often not one in the same. If you want to get high, then you hang out with people who are getting high. Criminals hang around crime, barbers around hair, and electricians around electricity- you get the picture. So the idea more than applies that if you want to stay sober, you act like it.

Re Re Re

There’s a reason the word rehab starts with “re”. Reincarnated. Rebirth. Revival. They all have that infamous “re” at the beginning. “Re” by definition in Merriam-Webster means again; anew; retell. Going to rehab and becoming sober is another chance at life. It is a chance to change the person we want to be when we lay our head down on the pillow each night. Learning to cope with stress after rehab is small potatoes in comparison to detoxing and having put the substances down already. Sometimes it’s all about perspective you know? Unfortunately the word relapse also starts with “re”, but then again so does restart… The point is that mistakes happen all the time, it’s just a matter of what we do with them. Learning to cope with stress after rehab will prevent them from becoming overwhelming. Stress begets stress.

Don’t Be Afraid to Cope

Change and fear of the unknown are some of the largest monsters we’ll ever face out there on our road to recovery. Without learning to cope with the stresses of reality after rehab, we’re just self sabotaging ourselves. Stress from fear or discomfort will halt even the strongest of men and women from accomplishing their feats of hope and courage. You see, getting clean from the booze and dope will require new hobbies, new friends, and a new lifestyle entirely. This humongous change can rattle even the most rational of addicts(that’s a pun). Fortunately as human beings, we are indeed creatures of adaptation and learn to survive in any means necessary. That is one of the best parts of life’s terms; it gives us opportunity after opportunity to keep going. Learning how to cope with stress after rehab and turning our lives around is exactly how we do just that- keep going.
