Pure Heroin – Responsible for 8 Recent Overdoses in MA

Hampden County is home to around 450,000 residents. It is located in Southwestern New Hampshire on the border of Connecticut. Currently, it is also at the center of a controversy involving the distribution of fatally pure heroin.

Known as “Hollywood” heroin, the drug has caused at least 8 overdoses n the last few days. This has prompted Hampden County police to issue a public warning, which stated “…heroin being sold under that stamp has proven exceptionally deadly in recent days.” Of the 8 overdoses, half were fatal.

The overdoses took place in the cities of Holyoke, Chicopee, Palmer and Ware. The victims were all men, aged 31, 44, 51, and 54. And half of the reported overdoses (including 3 fatalities) occurred on New Year’s Day.

At this time, police have not yet publicly indicated any leads regarding the source of the heroin. The name of the heroin was discovered when empty baggies were found at the scenes.

Heroin Statistics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of heroin overdoses in the U.S. have tripled since 2010. In 2014, overdoses were at a record high, increasing as much as 14% in just one year. And between 2000-2014, almost 500,000 Americans died from drug overdoses. The CDC notes that deaths by heroin and opioid painkillers are the biggest culprits.

Coincidentally, the overdoses came around the time Massachusetts police released 2015 statistics. Last year, 755 fatal heroin overdoses occurred. The average age was 36. These statistics, however, did not include major cities Boston, Springfield, and Worchester, as here local police are responsible for death investigations.

Back in November 2015, a similar series of events occurred in Haverhill, just one hour north of Boston. In that case, a bad batch of potentially pure heroin caused 5 overdoses in just a matter of hours.

The Cicopee Police Department stated on Facebook: “Please, if you know someone using, or are using, DO NOT use this.”

If you or someone you know is an addict, please seek help immediately.
