5 Recovered Celebrity Drug Addicts

Hollywood has seen its fair share of drug and alcohol excess – perhaps with good reason. It’s lonely at the top, or so they say. The pressures of stardom, the media, and living in a fishbowl sometimes becomes too much for even the hardiest of people. Add ambitious doctors, unfathomable riches, and fancy parties, and well – you have a perfect storm that can lead to addiction. Furthermore, there are no limits to who can become an addict – the poor and the wealthy alike may fall prey to it’s unrelenting grip.

But for some, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Here is a list of celebrity drug addicts who got sober and went on to be in full recovery.

Jamie Lee Curtis, American Actress and Author

Curtis, 51, is a highly-recognized actress who has starred in a variety of movies, including the original Halloween, Trading Places (for which she won Best Supporting Actress at the British Academy Awards) and True Lies. At age 35, she became addicted to painkillers after having cosmetic surgery. Also a recovering alcoholic, Curtis has now been sober for 15 years.

Robert Downey, Jr., American Actor

One of the most famous celebrity drug addicts is Robert Downey, Jr., thanks to a few drug possession cases, trips to rehab, and run-ins with the law. At various times, he was arrested for cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. In 1996, he was found one morning in his neighbor’s home sleeping in one of the beds, apparently under the influence of a illicit substance.

After he became sober for good in 2001, he started on the comeback trail by starring in huge blockbusters like Iron Man 1, 2, and 3.

Drew Barrymore, American Actress, Director, and Producer

Before Drew Barrymore was producing and starring in the Charlie’s Angels reboots, or the cult classic film Donnie Darko, she was the quintessential child star gone bad. She revealed in a biography at age 14 that she had been abusing alcohol, smoking pot, and using cocaine by age 12. She may be one of the youngest celebrity drug addicts, ever.

As an adult, she admits that she is not completely sober, but has found enough balance in her life to keep her addictions at bay.

Sir Elton John, British Singer-Songwriter

Sir Elton John, 68, is a multi-award winning artist, including six Grammys and five Brits. He is considered to be one of the most influential musicians in rock history. In 1998, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

John admits to having done drugs for many years, including a nasty cocaine habit that began in 1974. He also drank heavily and suffered from depression, low self-esteem, suicidal tendencies and eating disorders. He cleaned up his act for good about 25 years ago.

Steven Tyler, American Singer-Songwriter, Instrumentalist

Tyler is best known as the lyrical frontman for the rock group Aerosmith. His first trip to rehab was 1986, after which time he admitted to spending millions on cocaine and heroin. After a few years of sobriety, he got addicted to painkillers, but once again got back on track after another rehab in 2009. Recently he served as host on the reality TV series American Idol.

If you or someone you know is an alcoholic or drug addict, please seek help immediately.
