Pittsburgh Recovery Walk Celebrates Recovery From Addiction

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, a  free downtown Recovery Walk will take place. Currently, there are already more than 1,000 registered walkers. However, everyone is welcome to join, even without registration. The purpose of the walk is to encourage treatment program awareness, and celebrate recovery from addiction.

According to the website:

“The Pittsburgh Recovery Walk is an event that aims to dispel the negative stigma associated with recovery from addiction, and instead celebrate the many roads to recovery and all those who have traveled them.”

The walk begins at Liberty Avenue and 11th Street. Walkers will then head to Market Square for a celebration, which include a recovery expo with speakers, career services, a children’s tent, and other activities and entertainment. Singer Billy Price will be performing at the event as well.

The year-long planned event was modeled after other walks held elsewhere in the country. For example, next week a recovery walk is also happening in Philadelphia.

According to the website:

“People have been walking in Recovery Walks! to support recovery from drug and alcohol addiction disorders during September’s National Recovery Month for 15 years.”

The event was organized, in part, by Bruce Kraus, president of the Pittsburgh City Council. He himself conquered addiction and boasts a 28-year period of sobriety. Kraus wants everyone to know that there is hope and life after addiction, and is trying to make the event annual.

“We have to talk about hope and grace. This goes beyond the public and into the personal for me.”

“Clearly, the epidemic of addiction is not going to go away any time soon. The work has to continue.”

Another event organizer is Peter Luongo. executive director at the nonprofit Institute for Research, Education & Training in Addictions. Primary sponsors include UPMC and Centene Corp.

Other attending officials include Gov. Tom Wolf, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, and Gary Tennis, the state secretary of drug and alcohol program.
