The Science Behind Why Relaxing Nature Sounds Calm The Human Body

According to new research from the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, relaxing nature sounds change the body’s physiology in a manner that results in a calming effect. Such sounds include a babbling brook, wind rustling trees, and the ocean.

To be more specific, these nature sounds affect the body’s regulation of the fight-or-flight and rest-digest nervous systems. Moreover, nature sounds enable the brain to rest. Naturally-occurring sounds have previously been linked to relaxation and well-being, but until now there had been no scientific agreement as to how these effects manifest.

Lead author, Dr. Cassandra Gould van Praag:

“We are all familiar with the feeling of relaxation and ‘switching-off’ which comes from a walk in the countryside, and now we have evidence from the brain and the body which helps us understand this effect.”

“…[these] results…may have a real-world impact, particularly for people who are experiencing high levels of stress.”

About the Study

The study paired researchers with an audio-visual artist. They designed an experiment in which participants listened to pre-recorded sounds from both natural and artificial environments. Participant brain activity was measured using an MRI scanner, and nervous system activity was monitored by changes in heart rate.

Researchers discovered that brain activity in the “default mode network” varied dependent upon which sounds were heard. The default mode network is a collection of areas that are active when the body is at rest.

When participants heard natural sounds, brain scans revealed that their attention focus was directed outward. Conversely, when they listened to artificial sounds, attention focus was directed inward. The latter reflects a state a mind similar to anxiety, PTSD, and depression.

The rest-digest nervous system is associated with body relaxation.

As it turns out, the participants who revealed the greatest levels of stress before the experiment also showed the greatest body relaxation when they listened to natural sounds. However, those who were already relaxed in the MRI revealed a slight increase in stress when they heard natural sounds compared to artificial.

Research and interest into the effects of environmental exposure have been growing recently, and findings may heavily influence public health issues. This research, in particular, may be the first to offer evidence as to how the brain and body are precisely affected by the sounds of nature.
