Anxiety

Anxiety and Addiction Work Together and Can Be Treated Together

admissionAnxiety is one of the most crippling mental states in existence and everyone will likely experience it at one point or another in his or her life. There are many sources of anxiety and many different ways that people cope with its effects.

Unfortunately, one of the coping mechanisms people use far too often is drug abuse. When individuals find respite from anxiety by abusing harmful substances, they are extremely likely to take the same course of action the next time they feel the symptoms of anxiety.

Drugs can be very effective when used medicinally, but dangerous and often fatal when used without the supervision of a doctor. Addiction is only one of the many pitfalls of self-medicating drug use. It’s very important to know what types of mental health issues can produce anxiety and that there are resources, such as professional drug rehab, should you or someone you love fall prey to substance abuse.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Often beginning in childhood, this disorder creates a state of overwhelming anxiousness and nervousness that can interfere with an individual’s day-to-day functioning.

Panic Disorder

Panic disorder is sudden and powerful. Panic attacks manifest themselves seemingly out of nowhere and produce feelings of immense fear, nervousness or anxiety. They increase the heart rate and can cause sweating. Normal daily activities can induce them, making otherwise small or relatively insignificant sources of stress feel catastrophic and insurmountable.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social Anxiety Disorder occurs in social settings. We all feel this from time to time, but people who are diagnosed with social anxiety disorder feel the symptoms frequently and in exaggeration. Those with social anxiety disorder are overly concerned with being judged by peers and can suffer from panic attacks when in social settings.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD is fairly common in America and it arises from incidences of extreme stress or trauma. This disorder is commonly associated with dependence on drugs (largely alcoholism) and many patients of drug rehab find themselves there due to self-medicating away the symptoms of PTSD. However, the most effective treatments are to be found in cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, not drug abuse.

Knowledge is Paramount

If you know what you suffer from, the problem is much easier to treat. Don’t let your anxiety or drug addiction control your life. If you or somebody you know suffers from drug dependence, quality drug rehab is the best way to overcome it. You are strong and can get through this. Sometimes you just need a little help.
